The Quiet Things Part 3 by ~Ameliamalfoy:iconAmeliamalfoy:

A small genuine smile was spread across her lips and her dark brown eyes were alight. She looked like the very mousy type that probably was more into books than self made drama.
“I’m guessing you’re my new room mate?” she said, setting her book face down on the bed so that it marked the page. “My name’s Elizabeth Binks, it’s nice to meet you.” She held out her hand, the sweet smile still on her lips.
“Amelia Black, nice to meet you too,” I grabbed her warm hand and shook it. She looked nice enough, the smile never faded and the look in her eyes never turned to disgust. But I was still wary; only two years (give or take a day) had passed and since the move and all of the changes had occurred I was reminded again and again just how different I was than before.
“How about we start moving everything in?” my mother said, her entire face was alive with warmth and happiness.
“I’ll help,” Elizabeth offered helpfully. The three of us went down four floors, out the front door, and to the giant black SUV that towered over every other car in the parking lot. Each of us grabbed a bag and dropped it in the room before going back to the SUV and grabbing another one. With the three of us it surprisingly took us less than an hour to transport all of my things.
I went down the elevator one final time to hug Damien and my mother goodbye. Because I had no where else to go, I went back up to my room. Elizabeth was curled up on her bed with a book in her hands when I arrived. Slowly I unpacked my things and placed them where they belonged. The new clothes I had bought with my mother went in the small dresser and closet the school had provided. My laptop went on the standard desk to the right, as did my pencils and box of erasers. I had grabbed all of the things on my bed at home and had brought them with me. The few books that I had brought barely managed to fill the whole shelf of the narrow and tall book shelf the school had put in the room. I looked over at Elizabeth’s book shelf and was unsurprised that all of the shelves were full plus a pile of books next to the case that hadn’t been able to fit in the cluster. My even smaller collection of DVD’s and CD’s went into a pile next to the desk, hidden from the view by the door. Overall it looked similar to my room at the house I now called home. The only differences were the size of the room, which was much smaller, and the color of the walls, which had been painted a boring white.
It took me longer to get my side of the room to look the way I wanted it to than it had taken to get all of my things to room 513. By that time it was late, and I was hungry. I took and unconscious sip of my energy drink on hand before talking. “Where can we get food around here?” Sporadic conversation with Elizabeth had been twined into my organizing and her reading. I had found out she was seventeen years old but was a junior in high school, like myself. Her father was a dentist and her mother was a doctor. She never to spend any time with her parents but she was glad they were doing things that they enjoyed doing. I couldn’t see how being around mouths and sick people everyday was enjoyable but I let her talk, it was better than silence.
“Oh thank god,” Elizabeth sighed, setting her book down exactly how she had that morning. “I didn’t want to leave without you because I thought that that would be rude.” As we exited our room and went to the elevator she continued to talk. “I also though that interrupting you while you were trying to get everything together would be rude.”
I let out a laugh as we exited the elevator and walked through the door to outside. “You could have just said you were hungry. I can eat pretty much whenever, all I’ve had today was an energy drink.”
We traveled away from the dorms and parking lot. There was a pale sidewalk cutting through the lush lawn that was littered with large trees. Students were walking from the dorms, like us, in groups of two or three. Other students were lounging under the trees, enjoying their dinners in the form of a picnic. Looming ahead of us was a large building much like the one everyone would see when first entering school grounds. It was covered with large grey stones with a dark copper tin roof. Emerging from the roof were three large chimneys with smoke puffing from them. The two automatic doors leading into the cafeteria opened and released the flood of voices that was trapped inside. It was overwhelming and I had to stop in the doorway. Elizabeth walked a few steps ahead of me before realizing she had left me behind.
“What’s wrong?” she asked sincerely after coming back to where I was standing.
I took a deep breath, hoping to calm myself down, before I started to talk. “I’m fine,” I lied.
She grabbed my hand gently and led me to a table with a large group already sitting at one end. She let go of my hand and leaped into the arms of a tall lanky guy who wore glasses. Elizabeth quickly kissed the guy on the lips before starting introductions. The guy whom she had kissed was her boyfriend Tyler Issach. He was the same age as her and in the same grade as the both of us. The guy sitting to the right of Tyler was Charlie Kelvin. Charlie had dark red hair with a river of freckles across his nose and cheeks. He was only fifteen and a sophomore but he was rather adorable, if not cute. Sitting on the table, instead of in a chair like everyone else, were three guys. Fred and Frank Kelvin were leaning against each other Fred had faded orange hair while Frank had dark brown hair. The similarities between the two of them were eerie and I was instantly told by Elizabeth that they were twins. The third guy was leaning against frank, while frank had his pale arm draped around his shoulders. This was Jared Jones. He had everything that went with his dark skin, dark brown eyes, thick black hair, and dreadlocks. The three of them were all eighteen and seniors. The last person at the table was miles Cameron. He was sixteen, in his junior year, and absolutely gorgeous. His straight dark brown hair flipped out slightly at the ends as if he would normally be seen wearing a hat. His eyes were a deep dark blue and had a mischievous glint to them.
The last empty chair was between Miles and the three seniors. Elizabeth was already sitting in the lap of her darling boyfriend. Shyness overcame me but it didn’t stop me from slowly walking to the chair and sitting with my energy drink gripped tightly in my hand.
“So, your name is Amelia right?” the senior with the red hair, Fred, asked. All I could do was nod and watch a smile light up his face. “Well, Amelia, you’ll like it here. There are some good people you’ll hate but if you make good friends you’re golden.” He winked, which sent the other two seniors into fits of laughter.
A small grin went to Miles lips but his tone was serious when he talked. “Leave her alone. I don’t think she came here to be made fun of. Besides if you keep acting that way than she sure as hell won’t become friends with you.” This sent them into even more hysterical fits.
I growled internally and shoved my shyness away. “No, I didn’t come here to have to deal with assholes like you. I came here to get some food.” I stood up and pushed my chair away, which caused it to grind against the linoleum floor. I walked away from the table and towards the different sections of food. There were large signs above each section that stated the type of food that was in that section; salads, Mexican, cereal, and even Japanese. “Holy shit,” I whispered to myself as I moved through the crowds. Everything looked appetizing, even the dry cereal.
“Sorry about that.” Miles was suddenly next to me. “You can usually just ignore everything Fred says.”
I stopped and looked straight at him, judging if he was here to make fun of me or not. His lips broke into a grin, but there was not a hint of mischievousness in it. “I’m not going to be mean to you.” The smile grew bigger when he heard me let out a deep breath. “So, where are you from?”
I told him the lie Damien had come up with a few days before. My family and I had moved from Virginia to California, that had been true. But the reason behind moving had changed dramatically. I told him that we had moved simply because Damien had heard that this school was really good. I didn’t tell him about the drugs, alcohol, rape, or my
GPA that shouldn’t have let me even start school here. Miles followed me as I grabbed an apple from one station, a piece of cake from another, and a sub sandwich from the last. He listened to everything I said and by the time we returned to the table he knew almost everything about me, there really wasn’t that much to know about me.
Before I set my food on the table I glared at Fred, Frank, and Jared. “If any of you touch my food I will kick your ass.” I growled, miles smiled at that and sat down. This time miles say in the chair next to the three seniors. After an hour of talking and eating the group of eight, including myself, returned to our dorms. It was still early but Elizabeth reminded me that we would have to wake up at sic in the morning to get ready for the assembly being held. As soon as I laid myself in the bed I fell asleep.
